After clinching the UEFA Player of the Year award ahead
of Antoine Griezmann and Gareth Bale on Thursday afternoon, after which
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez claimed the forward hopes to
retire at the club.
He also expressed his pleasure at seeing two
Real Madrid players among the final three in the voting for the award,
as well as discussing the club's goals for the 2016/17 season.
"[Ronaldo] wants to retire at Madrid and we want him to retire here," the president said in an interview with beIN Sports.
"Everybody
is talking about the [contract] renewal, yet we should all relax, as
we're going to enjoy his presence and leadership for many years to
come."
For the first time since the UEFA Player of the Year award
was created in 2011, Los Blancos had two players among the three
finalists and Perez spoke of how encouraging that was for the club.
"I'm very happy because two Real Madrid players have been among the best in Europe," he said.
"Collectively it was a great season.
"[Ronaldo's]
award is recognition for the effort and work that he puts in to become,
in my opinion, the best player in the world.
"He has won everything, both at an international level and with Real Madrid by winning the Champions League."
"For [Bale] to be here too is in recognition of a huge season."
However,
Perez did not want his superstars to rest on their laurels and set out
an ambitious goal for Real Madrid to win an unprecedented treble under
the stewardship of Zinedine Zidane.
"Our goal is to win everything, as that is the requirement at Real Madrid.
"Zidane knows that we have to win LaLiga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey."
In
the club's quest to retain their Champions League title, they learned
at the event in Monaco that they'll have to overcome Borussia Dortmund,
Sporting Lisbon and Legia Warsaw in the group stage.
